hit a garage sale this morning, saw some stamps had a look but nothing good, also had comics and hockey cards then I noticed a table in the back with coins so I went to see ,,he had alot of coins but he was asking full book price plus some on everything but I thought might as well ask if he has any large cents maybe I could find some varieties, he says yip right here, he hands me a binder of easily a few hundred vickys, as soon as I opened it I noticed every single coin had that "ive been cleaned with braso" look to them sigh...looked anyway saw a couple minor varieties but not worth the price he was asking. then he asked if I collect copper tokens I said sure, opened tht binder and again every single one was cleaned, talk about destroying your entire collection . I guess some people would rather have a polished coin over a natural coin, not me I said thanks and left

lol maybe.
but he did have some comics he told me were rare 1st 2nd 3rd editions but he had them signed by the author or whoever he said it was and I believe that would bring the value down as your item is no longer mint

I hope that it wasn't the block-long garage sale held on the block next to mine .. maybe 6-7 set-ups.

You wonder why they keep doing this? Must never watch Antiques Roadshow or talk to other collectors. I can understand removing dirt and grease. But never remove metal! And of course that is what happens when you shine up a coin.

Same thing goes on with antique fishing tackle (and no doubt other collectibles). There are some expensive early reels made of german silver (white brass). If not messed with, they have a frosty crystal like finish similar to luster on uncirculated coins. But with just a little buffing, their surfaces turn into mirrors that you could shave with.

Amazing how few remain with original surfaces. I keep telling folks you can always polish an item but you can NEVER unpolish it!

Here is a nice one, and one that has been polished. Note the reflection on the polished one. Both are in great condition except for the finish. And while the one in box is more common, because it is "minty" I sold it for ten times more than the other.

if he them personalized then yeah, somewhat. if it was the author or artist signature only then it would definitely add value.
