Hello,

I was looking through some of my bags of world coins, and came across this one. I think it is a China 1 Jiao (10 cents) from 1897(?). I know nothing about this period, and was wondering if anyone could tell me anything about the coin, and possibly if it's worth anything.

Thanks!

If it is a genuine Pei Yang coin, values may be difficult. One catalog shows $60 to $500 and online sales records show a wide range from a $150 or so to $1000.

Some catalogs have coins that look similar under Chihli Province with values varying from $7.50 to $30

Much better quality and larger pictures would help.

Hi ALbert, thanks for your reply! I didn't think the coin was worth very much at all!

I have uploaded some photos that I think are slightly better, along with a picture of the edge of the coin.

Thanks again!

The value may or may not be much. Check your coin first if it silver. And then these measures: 19mm dia, 7/8mm thick, 2.7g weight.
There are 5 varieties of this coin. My idea, if the coin is genuine, is that it may be the more common and lower end of the price range.

Usually when I see posts asking about Chinese silver, most times they end up to be fakes. This however is definitely genuine. From Peiyang province dated 1897, denomination 1 jiao. I believe in this condition, it should exceed 200 dollars - I don't quite keep track of prices so I could be quite off. (hopefully more)
