1989 D LMC Mintmark Too Far Right?

So compared to another 1989 D cent, the D mintmark seems as if it's too far to the right. Instead of the mintmark being between the 9 in 19, and the 8 in 89, the mintmark is pretty much equal to the 8 in 89.

Can someone explain this? Thank you

Yep. Mintmark were punched in by hand until 1990, so the mintmark locations and position always varied from different dies used to strike coins.

There seems to be a a small community that collects the more extreme MM locations, but I don't think they carry much of a premium.

Just to echo the frog, I think that if the mintmark is so far from center that it is touching another design element then you have something, but not so much otherwise.

The target area is below the date, to the right of the bust and inside the edge of the coin rim on the right. As already mentioned they are hand punch and can have different locations inside the target area I described.
