Flavius Valentinianus, known to history as Valentinian I (The Great), as the western emperor mounted numerous successful military campaigns, securing the frontiers a last time before calamities engulfed and wrecked the empire after his death.

Common though issues of Valentinian I may be, I picked this specimen up on account of the well preserved portrait. I'm pretty sure this is some variation of RIC IX 9a (Aquileia).

That is a wicked nice portrait, although the die crack coming off of the diadem on the back of his head is cool too.

After Constantius II, it's next to impossible to find an "XF" bronze of any emperor without reaching the price point where you might as well buy a siliqua. This has to be one of the nicer Valentinian bronzes I've seen. The portrait does also look a lot thinner and well... skinnier than the rest of his issues I've seen. I think it's Valentinian I, but it would be worth investigating that it could be Valentinian II... they did use the same obverse legends for this issue.

"they did use the same obverse legends for this issue."

After the death of Val I, Vall II initialy had an unbroken legend or the addition of IVN that made it clear who it was. "When the distinction was no longer felt to be necessary, his legend would be the same as his father's" RIC IX xxxviii
