Picked this up off ebay for $8 and shipping to add to my struck through collection. They had it as 1983 but looks like 1988 to me.

Looks like 83 to me the 3 drops down below the 8.

Could be. Anyone know enough about the FG initials to place the coin based on the size of them? They don't look very 1988 to me.

Looks like a struck through capped die. Awesome pickup! As for the date, I see a 1983 as well. I believe the FG is the correct match for that date as well.

What is the weight? It looks like a copper planchet? The initials look more like the RDV-004 74-85 reverses.

@Coop, I see a few small plating blisters/bubbles on the reverse in the 3rd and 4th bays (counting from the left to right. I still don't know how the column numbering works) . That being said, I think it's a zinc planchet.

I saw what Coop saw in the initials when I first looked at it and weighed it. It is 2.5g and zinc.

Nice pickup. Probably an early stage die cap

I thought "capped die" when I first saw it, but it doesn't look cupped and the rim is pretty intact.

So I'm guessing a 1983 then.

Pulled it back out and gave it another round of tilting in the light. I think I have switched over and am agreeing with the 1983 folks. It does look more like a 3.

Really nice pick up, especially at that price.

I was leaning towards 1983 as well because of the remnants of the clash in bay 3 and top of 8. Not sure what the die damage is where the rim gutter meets the field west of the left upper base, but maybe part of a clash or just polishing.
'83 sure had lots of clashes and subsequent die scratches from polishing, Cuds and even a couple of counter clashes.
Words of encouragement are one of the major food groups.
We need to consume them regularly to thrive and grow.
