1955 D Lincoln Wheat Cent / LWC , Never Seen This On A Rim Before? Looks Like 2 Small Cutouts

Valhallabound Valued Member United States 108 Posts	Posted 08/12/2019 02:38 am This coin has an odd issue with the obverse rim at around 4 o'clock that looks like to crescent shapes have been taken out. There are various die cracks and other stuff going on. the top of the wheat looks messed up, the rear reverse rim is effected as well but I've never seen a rim look like it does on the obverse. stoneman227 Pillar of the Community United States 2376 Posts	Posted 08/12/2019 07:50 am Going off of the OP'S pics and descriptions. This area is recessed. There appears to be some ragged fill from the strike on the interior portion of the anomaly. The proto-rim is showing inside the anomaly. To me this looks to be a coin struck on a incomplete planchet . I doubt the weight loss of the planchet would be enough to truly register. Report this Post to the Staff

But the rest of the rim around it isn't raised either like a fin. So probably removed then. How does that happen to a coin? Just breaks off after the extra metal is smashed out?
