We have a pile of Hong Kong coins from the 1970s and 1980s. Are these still being used today? I notice the $5 has a different shape now. We'll be transiting there soon and want to use them up.

@altaira, to the extent that the information on wikipedia is accurate, it appears that your QE2 coins are still legal tender (with the exception of the 5 cent coins, which have been discontinued).

I guess that means it's still widely accepted in circulation. Got around $100 worth of coins, a good amount.

Thank you, I will. Hopefully nothing eventful will go down while I'm there.

To my understanding, only coins with up-to-date sizes are in circulation. This would really only disqualify the old, large 10c and 10-sided $5 coins. Older designs but with sizes and shapes like current coins, such as those with QEII on them, can still be used but are actively pulled. I think Numista lists the wrongly shaped coins as demonetised.

Thanks. I'll spend them while I still can.
