Hello All!

I think that this a lamination error but I am not 100% sure. Anyone have any thoughts on the 1917 Wheat penny? Thank you in advance!

Does lamination mean that the copper is "peeling off" ? Trying to understand what lamination is and are they worth hunting?

Yay!
Thanks @errers and varietys! I am looking through a bag of wheat pennies and this one stood out almost immediately.

@rookie2018 my understanding is that a lamination error has to do with a planchet problem or defect. I am not the expert though so I could be wrong

The flaw obviously didn't keep it from circulating for a long time.

It certainly looks to be a "lamination crack", see: http://www.error-ref.com/lamination-cracks/

A lamination issue is when the metal is being roll out, the metal had pieces of flaking off metal bits, pieces of loose copper rolled into the stock material. When the metal is cut into blanks, the lamination pretty much stays in place. But when going through the setup mill to create the proto rim, the lamination maybe loosened. After being struck it can remain and then fall off in the bins or helped to come off by collectors. I used to try to sell them, but not much interest in them. %0 cent to a dollar for memorials. Usually double for later wheats and triple or quadruple for earlier wheats. Always depending on how much of the area is affected. That is key. I know O a guy that got 5 figures for a large one with one large part of the lamination. But you just have to have the best ones to get that kind of money.
