I've got a more radical example that I posted a couple months ago. I sold this Buffalo on ebay earlier this year for about $50, and the buyer just resold it for $65 after "improving" it. Not much of a return for his efforts, and it's sad that he ruined it. I like the more subtle AT on 52Raymo's 1903 IHC much better.

As much as I am critical of certain ebay policies, this has nothing to do with the site and happens at coin shows and stores all over the place

Anything man can do nature can do, so while it is most likely man made yes it is possible that nature did it. That's why we go with market acceptable/unacceptable as opposed to natural vs artificial. Plenty of natural things look man made and some man made ones look natural. It's just a guessing game unless you have had the coin since the day it was minted and know it's entire history. Whether or not that coin was artificial or natural it wouldn't be acceptable either way.

I agree with this, too.

I don't think the 1903 would look that different in hand. Perhaps something like verdicare was used to make the surfaces more attractive and then the coin was photographed in different lighting

You can see that he cleaned the fields, darkened it, and then added blue toning of some sort.

Nice discussion and warnings. 30 years ago I went to a show and met up with a very experienced wise broker / agent who showed me coins for sale there that were easily toned with a blow torch! Not sure if folks modify/cheat that way in 2021, but it was fascinating to learn first hand about how easy it is to grift!

Stay well,

That's really sad, so many nice coins destroyed. I've seen edynamicmarketing's offers on ebay-"monster" toned this or that, pretty much buys up any numismatic material, rounds, coins, bullion, and then plies his trade. Then lo and behold this edynamicmarketing r buys a South African shilling from me, nothing fancy, but I guess he was planning on taking a fairly average, but nice, coin and sprucing it up with his craft and sell it for double. I cancelled the order and put the seller on the blocklist on ebay.

I had a polished 1872-S dollar at one time. I gave it the frying pan treatment to see if I could improve it. It wasn't polished but plated. The plating came off revealing the plug....

It was like trading one kind of ugly for another.

Haha, love the terms for these retouched metals..toothpaste coin

These are really nice looking items, but almost fall out of touch with traditional coinage? As another said, it certainly falls well within the bounds of disturbing and intriguing...

The 1891 IHC looks like a chocolate coin with a golden wrapper around it.

That Buffalo looks like it was pretty heavily tooled before it got the AT treatment. A lot of lost detail between the two pictures in addition to the disneyland color. Darned shame.
