I often see gold or silver plated coins. I always remove the silver plated ones because I don't want someone to assume they are silver in the photos. What I've read on here suggests some folks think gold plated ones are an interesting find. What is your personal opinion on finding plated coins? Here are 3 coins I am contemplating and a Swiss cheese coin I will definitely get rid of. The 72 is probably out too it's plating is no longer complete.

While the plating doesn't add anything to the market value of the coin, some people find a different appearance interesting. Not my cup of tea, but to each their own. If you like it, then power to ya!

I agree with everything that @civt just said.

I know it doesn't and real value, I guess it would be more clear to ask if you thought a plated coin was any less desirable then a normal coin when the value of both is only face value.

I would actually like to see one chrome plated, if for no other reason than to see how it would photograph. The plating couldn't be too thick, though. Otherwise, it would probably look similar to a brilliant SMS nickel.

They are alot harder to take pictures of but here's a couple. The edge is the part I worry people will mistake for silver. I would say the first picture is upside-down just for Jbuck but its just a happy accident.

Quote: The '72 looks like someone hit it with birdshot Could be but they go all the way through, with minimal change in angle, and no obvious increase in size on the reverse. Pretty sure they are just holes someone drilled.

I do not like plated coins (outside of the mint) in general. I consider them damaged coins, maybe that's just me though. John1

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and I do not behold them. That being said, even a novelty coin can spark an interest in the hobby, so they have some intrinsic value.

At this point in my coin collecting life, I'm indifferent. Of course that may change as I get even older.

I like Ikes. Period. Plated ones need love, too. Would I put them in my set? No. But I would keep them in my miscellaneous album just for the fun of it.
