I just purchased an "UNOPENED GSA CC Morgan dollar" from an ebay seller, but the sealed shipping box shows no stampings of any kind, and has no shipping label. I know it's possible that this was from a FULL CASE of unopened GSA CC Morgans, but how can I be sure it's legit without opening it? The shipping box shows no signs of being tampered with, is a nice creamy off-white with light toning. For my peace of mind, I need to know if anyone else has ever bought & opened one of these, and if so, what was found inside? Any help out there?
fioti.....the value is supposedly higher for unopened, but I am trying to confirm authenticity before I even attempt to open. the blank box has me a little nervous....was trying to find out if anyone else has ever seen this before.
nfine....not quite correct. I plan to video the opening of the shipping box....if the contents are not as described by the seller, I can absolutely demand, and get a full refund. I don't care if it's a "common" date Morgan, just that it's LEGIT.
You can't be sure, it is possible to open and reseal these boxes without detection. The same with mint boxes of quarters / dollars etc. if done carefully and correctly, they can be opened without damage and resealed. It doesn't do much good to broadcast the details, but it's not hard to figure out. Which is why I would never buy anything sealed for more than the lowest value possible.
Ever wonder why there are so many "rare" pedigree ASE? Careful opening and closing, even on current mint boxes, sent to NGC and PCGS and graded, is happening.
I'm sure it's possible with older sealed too.
But if you think you can open one and send it back if you don't like the content - I very strongly doubt that.
Maybe you know somebody at a college lab or in the medical field that could xray or CT scan it to a least be sure there's a coin in there? My local coin store has a radioactive metal tester called Thermo Precious Metals Analyzer that gives the specific metal content of a coin, maybe one of those would work through the box? But these wouldn't give you year or grade obviously.
MKM5854 watch this video from 14:27 onwards if you don't have the time to watch the whole thing, It Talks about your "unopened white box". Hope this helps.
