Just starting to take pics of coins with my cell phone, a Samsung Note 8. Most of my coins are Morgan/Peace $. The cell phone pics are an incredible improvement from those in my tattered and dog-eared copy of Wayne Miller's book! However, I'm thinking about selling coins on e-bay. My first coin pics didn't show the luster on the coins very well unless I took the pic with the camera at an angle. Any suggestions on how to get best quality pic showing correct luster of the coin and detail? Also, do I need a stand to hold the cell phone to take better pic? Thanks.

I just put the coin on a flat surface, have a lamp at a 45° angle about 1 foot away and then take the photo at a slight angle

That's because you were "controlling" the lighting angle by moving the camera. It should be the other way around. You need to get a small adjustable lamp or two so that you can control the lighting to suit a head-on pic of the coin. That will give the best focus and clearest shot. The lighting just needs to be adjusted.

Thanks very much for the suggestions. I got a second lamp and brought both lamps closer to the coin. Also, I started using a coffee cup to hold the cell phone steady (a suggestion from the photography thread on CCF) and am now taking coin pics from straight down. And they are showing luster and coin details just fine. Now if I could just get my new PayPal account to link with my bank account, I'll be ready to post my pictures on e-bay and sell a few coins.
