Just inherited a collection and found this coin.

My beginner's research leads me to believe that this is a VF-30 based on the level of wear on the hair.

Would love other opinions and if anyone has an idea of the value, that would be helpful.

Thanks

Hey welcome to the community and congratulations on your inheritance!
I think this coin is XF40. Some other members will also give their opinion. Solid CC date!

I'd up it to XF-45.

Coloring is mottled, which detracts, but reverse suggests close to AU-50.

Thank you !

I know there are a large number of counterfeit Morgan dollars. Any way to know if this is a fake?

XF-40

If you're concerned about authenticity, you could send it to ANACS to be graded. It's cheaper to send it to them than to PCGS or NGC. If it comes back as real, you could consider cracking it out and sending to one of the other services.

Weight it and test it with a magnet.

Id say around XF somewhere but mostly because I don't like the eye appeal.

Two things are concerning to me: one the copper color in-between the leaves the eagle holds and Lady Liberty's droopy eye. It should weight 26.73 grams and not be magnetic.

I agree, AU-50 but poor eye appeal.

I'd say XF-45, possibly some mild environmental damage. Looks genuine, the date and MM are a match with VAM-2. If you send it in for grading, it might be worth getting conservation services.
