So bought some mint sets a few weeks ago and was checking them out today. Found something a little different in a 1981 set; on the Denver 25C George has a little tunnel running from jawline all the way down to the top of base on his neck. The little tunnel doesn't run past his neck which makes it a little more interesting to me, and using the slightest of touch you can feel the indentation. Probably a mechanical issue coming of the press.

Looks like some type of struck through something.

I've seen this quite a bit and am not sure what causes it. It's especially common on '78-D quarters IMS.

Looking at a single specimen would lead one to believe it's missing metal in the planchet but they all look a lot like this one.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.

Planchette void was my first thought, I'll start paying attention to 78-D's.
