I am curious to know if saving/collecting "Red" Lincoln Memorial Cents is worthwhile. I know that "Red" cents are always worth more than Red/Brown or Brown cents for any year or mint.

To put together a set of LMC's all RD would look pretty nice. But, with most having ridiculously high mintages and not a high demand, don't expect the collection to be worth a huge premium. swcoin.ecrater.com

I am saving all the RD AU cents I can find that aren't too badly marked up with carbon spots and such. I am hoping that sometime in the distant future I could sell them as rolls.

With the popularity of the LC, and with a new design in 2009 honoring President Lincoln, might not be a bad idea. What's the downside? Why not.

Believe it or not even with the ridiculously high mintages it took 20 years to find an MS-70 LMC . Here is the article from PCGS http://www.pcgs.com/articles/articl...iverseid=313given that record its worth the search for the second MS-70 but on the other hand to keep all of the AU cents I'm not so sure . But a set that stands above average 66 and above then you would have something that will gain in value and it won't take a hundred years to do it . |

I've seen this coin. It is pristine. I cannot believe it is a "perfect" coin. I bet with some hugely powerful microscope, you would spot some hairline or mark somewhere on the coin. I liked it so much, I bought a 2003 LMC PCGS MS68. Believe me, in 68, this coin looks awesome! I figured the $18 price tag was well worth it. swcoin.ecrater.com

PCGS is pretty conservative in grading coins. So, if PCGS says it's MS70, then it really is MS70.

LOL, that is kinda funny because PCGS doesn't say it is a 70 anymore- it got downgraded to 69 due to developing a spot  |

Meanwhile back to your question. Yes it is well worth while to collect those. If nothing else they will always look pretty neat in an album. And that too depends on which one. The Whitman is Blue, The Dansco is sort of light Brown, I think Littleton is Green but not sure. My way of looking at it is such a set as you mention would stand out more in anything except Brownish since the coins will not stand out so much. Many will always answer with a monitary gain aspect but collecting coins is supposed to be fun so who cares what they are worth?
I also collect flashlights and I know they are just not worth a lot of money but they are to me a sort of bright idea for a collection.
I've got other collections that also are really not worth collecting monitarily but they are fun anyway.

What's the deal with those ugly black carbon spots on red Lincolns? It is so hard to find a Red LMC without black spots. It's annoying for a collector that wants spot-free coins. |

Since they are 99% zinc, they still have a copper plating and copper may tend to get carbon flecking or spots.
