Question Concerning The S Mintmark On A 1945 S Jn

Jim0815 Pillar of the Community United States 5238 Posts	Posted 09/09/2019 2:44 pm I have this 1945 S Jefferson nickel and I have a question concerning the mintmark. The one in question is the same height from the top to be bottom of the field as the other one of mine in pic 4. Its not even shaped the same. My first thought was circulation wear but with the height the same I cant see that much metal being moved. The coin in question weighs 4.86 grams the other one I have weighs 4.82 grams. Although I cannot find anything on any site saying two different mintmarks with the only one being the MMS-003. I am pretty stumped on this one. Could there have been a second mintmark or am I missing something here? The last pic is from Variety Vista. Report this Post to the Staff

Tanman2001 Pillar of the Community United States 4395 Posts	Posted 09/09/2019 3:31 pm Mintmarks were punched in by hand, some of these large mintmarks have stronger, more complete punches than others. The mint employee put a bit of elbow grease into that one. Report this Post to the Staff
Jim0815 Pillar of the Community United States 5238 Posts	Posted 09/09/2019 3:41 pm It's pretty strong to say the least but as strong as it is I don't see how a perfect serif coming down from the top curl could have been made from that as the punches themselves were just so deep. tanman, regardless, this "Super S" is going in a 2x2. If it were an issue, all the other devices in that area would also be affected. Check to see if that is the case? Report this Post to the Staff
