Beautiful coin and I certainly think you solved your own riddle with your link. If the size matches I see no reason to think the coin is not the same series but I don't see a match for the happy face gentleman from the other examples. So just like I'd like to see a gorgon look like others I would hope you could find a similar die match for the head.

Thanks for your reply! Weight is 17.1g and size is 27mm. Seems to be fairly close to the other Æ Hemilitrons. Is this worth enough to be slabbed you think or...?

Looks like its supposed to be Hercules, with that hairstyle actually being a lions pelt.

It is an excellent example, but ancients just aren't supposed to be slabbed (there is no sensible, useful grading system) and you will find that the next owner will almost certainly remove it from the slab. A collector looking for a coin like this probably won't need the help of a slabbing company to decide its grade or authenticity and, if it goes to auction, it won't need further authentication.

Thanks echizento and Ben - Okay, I won't slab it :) I guess I wasn't really sure how to authenticate it since I can't find one just like it anywhere. Any suggestions?

Interesting--a counterstamp on an old flan, perhaps as way to easily re-isuse/devalue old coins. There may have been numerous varieties of counterstamps. Thanks for sharing!

As for slabbing the coin with NGC etc, I currently have a Byzantine Gold I am having them do this to if they think it is probably real as I have no hope I selling it for a decent price otherwise and people trusting me as I have a lifetime guarantee and they will just send it off anyway and get the money back if not real, so in that case I am doing a slab / authenticate. But I sell estates and slabbed ancient bronzes that are obviously real I have sold a lot of with the NGC case and some sold as low as $30 for a coin worth unslabbed about $20. So I decided long ago with the high cost to get the work done and no real return for my money I just sell coins slabbed if they came to me slabbed and I offer about $5-$10 more than the coin price I'd normally give for the unslabbed coin.
