Florida Highway Patrol investigators said one semi truck rear-ended another around 5:15 a.m. Wednesday on Interstate 95 in Brevard County. The collision caused one of the trucks -- carrying over $180,000 worth of nickels -- to overturn, spilling its cargo across the highway.
A passenger in sleeper area of the truck, identified as William Sherman, 61 from Elkton Maryland, carrying the coins died at the scene.
"The passenger in the semi that caused the crash was killed and the driver was taken to Holmes Hospital," said Lt. Michael Brown with the FHP.
The driver of the truck which rear-ended the other is identified as William Rohrman, 54, of Levitt, Pennsylvania. The driver of the other truck, identified as Ferlandis Green, 46, of Callahan, Florida, was taken to Parrish Medical Center with minor injuries.
"I seen two guys in a truck. One in the front; one in the back, pinned-in. I tried to help him, but I couldn't help him. There's was nothing I could do," said Green.
"The truck that was carrying the nickels was heading from the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia to the Federal Reserve Bank in Miami," said Lt. Brown.
Traffic was slow-moving for several hours, between Stuckway Road and State Road 46, as federal agents tried to determine how best to gather the coins. A portion of the interstate remained closed until all of the nickels were collected.
Investigators estimated that 3 million nickels were on the side of the highway. The exact cause of the accident is still unknown.

I did a google search for images and now wish I hadn't. I was looking for mounds of spilled nickels but the actual wreckage was disturbing to me. :(

Wonder why not an even amount like $200,000?
20 tons of nickels.

Does this mean that 2008 P Nickels in top MS conditions could become more rare, since all the spilled nickels probably got dinged around and then the cleanup crew probably didn't care to keep them pristine looking?

Nah, that's only 3.6 million nickels... mintage has been around 400 million/year lately. Not enough to have an impact.

I believe this is less than half of one percent of the nickels minted at Philadelphia each year, so I do not think it will affect conditional rarity.

I heard the story on the way into work this morning and they did not put in the information of how bad the accident was or that someone died, just enough to make a few bad jokes. If you want more information I found the following link with actual news footage: http://jalopnik.com/5051291/deadly-...floridas-i95What scared me is that they say the second truck 'bumped' the first truck, how hard was that bump? Seems to me that someone fell asleep at the wheel and their foot was pushing a little too hard on the gas pedal.

Quote: Secret Service and Treasury agents went to the area to make sure no one tries to grab the coins.

yes, because all the nickels a person is likely able to carry is worth like $200

One news station stated a guy was trying to pick up nickels and the SS ordered him to drop them and walk away.

Should have seen our Metrolink crash out here in So. Cal. It was a bad one. Being prior law enforcement, I am used to seen these wreckage's. It still gets to you though ie. loss of life etc.

Sorry to hi-jack the thread for a second, but Vermont, you need to post your guess in DL20K's Guess the Price thread before you get eliminated! Now, back on topic, I feel it is a shame when the humour of the situation, what little there really is, overshadows the loss of life.

Quote: I feel it is a shame when the humour of the situation, what little there really is, overshadows the loss of life I agree, my uncle was a logger in oregon and he died when the chains on the truck snapped and the logs fell on him. Some loser journalist actually inserted the old "when a tree falls in the forest is there anyone around to hear it?" joke. sick that it was printed yet, made it out of the mind of a writer and was approved by an editor. I find it disturbing that in each report I have read about this incident, it is 3 or 4 paragraphs about the nickels and secret service and one sentence about the injury and death involved. Quote: Should have seen our Metrolink crash out here in So. Cal. It was a bad one I have seen footage of that and it angered me as well. The injury and loss of life of course, but also how they had already blamed the driver (true or not) before any type of real testing or analysis could possibly have been done to verify the blame. I think this world is being over run by people who speak before they think and that's a terrible thing to have happen. malissa
