Here is an interesting one I came across today. It appears to be rim finning but I've never seen the gap go so wide before. Some other type error possibly? And not even sure what is happening in that gap. Was a Cud forming? Also is this a strike through on the lower mouth? From afar it looks like Abe is screaming.
1982 had the large and small dates. The large date master hub was replaced that year with the small date master hubs. Not on this coin, the weakness of the design? getting pretty mushy and the devices were moving towards the rims. If this is a zinc cent, the rim might have been scratched and split the plating on the areas you are looking at on the rims. But no premium for this.
Rim fining is caused by by the hammer die being tilted. That outer edge is raised above the rim a lot higher. (most of the time later flattened) But along with it being taller, it is also thinner:
