1907 Indian Cent Necklace, Anybody Know Anything About This?

It really has nothing to do with the US Mint. Lots of companies sell lower grade coins like this by encasing them in gold or gold plated jewelry. The coin isn't worth that much, maybe a dollar or two, but then the company selling the "Collector's Item" damages the coin further by cleaning or even polishing the surfaces. Most coins are also damaged by the encasement process. The HGE means "heavy gold electroplate," so it isn't solid gold.

It's not an item that most coin collectors would be interested in.

I did find an auction for a different necklace by the same company. It's an 1899 Indian Head cent in an 18 Kt. gold electroplate necklace with man made diamonds. It sold for $21.

It's not unattractive, but would look better with a real US gold coin in the middle. You could probably acquire a damaged (ex-jewelry) $1 gold of your choice and modify it to fit inside the bezel.

Edit: I'd guesstimate it around 57-60mm diameter (2.25" or so.)

The style of the lettering, box, and inserts suggests 70s-80s vintage to me. These were sold in magazines (Readers Digest, Life, etc) and via mass mailers long before HSN and QVC existed.

The 14K electro finish should hold up well over time (and has) -- it's not worth much at all, but as a sort of costume jewelry or vintage wear, who cares? You could even take that a step further and turn it into a cool badge holder for a coin show with some silver or gold wire and clips.

I just can't appreciate coin destruction, even for a common coin.

A friend of mine who runs a local jewelry shop with his two sons once told me that his least favorite part of his job is having to tell happy people who walk in with tons of "ultra valuable gold jewelry" they inherited from Grandma or their parents that they now own a bunch of worthless scrap metal, costume jewelry, and gold-filled, plated, HGE, etc. and the resulting looks on their faces when their big payday isn't.

He also told me that this is (very rarely) offset by the person who brings in something they think is a worthless bauble with the rest of their junk only to find out that it's real gold and real gemstones (last year, this happened with a decent sized sun-shaped gold colored brooch that was thought to be 50s or 60s gold-plated vintage costume jewelry and ended up being 18k with approximately 2.2cts total weight in good diamonds.)
