Yep, certainly looks like it spent some time in acid.

That is possible, When one looks at Liberty they are very close to the edge. The size of the coin is smaller in diameter,it fits inside the other dime, and I am not sure there would be any reeding left if acit took the coin down this far. Plus would there be that much detail left when you look how much was removed if by acid? Its possible I guess I have never tested putting a coin in acid I think the condition would be much worse. I may have to try it. LOL

I still think it is acid damage. I hope you can return it. Otherwise that is an expensive lesson learned.

@arby, yes you absolutely should return this coin to the seller if you can. As noted above it has been altered by soaking in acid and is not a mint error. Other than the lesson learned, one positive to come from this is the fact that you took an amazingly good pic of the edge of this coin--significantly above average. Well done!

Thanks again for the info, I don't mind too much taking the loss, I told the seller I would take a chance on the dime. Some lessons are inexpensive and others are not. I also purchased from him a 1894S Morgan, judging by the photograde by PCGS is between VF12-VF20. So its not a total loss. Thanks again. I may try and duplicate this dime, so I have a better understand of how and what to look for. I have seen other coins acid damaged and it was very obvious to me. This one was not. Thanks again.
