I found this Massachusetts quarter that is slightly smaller than other quarters has very sharp edge with no reeds and the raised parts of the quarter have no detail. The coin does not appear heavily circulated.

Might have spent some time in an acid bath, causing the copper and clad reeds to dissolve. Copper would be affected more rapidly

Moosieweed88,

It's not on a nickel planchet, the copper core means it's clad. It looks like it may be a Dryer Coin. The reeded edge has been flattened and I see some wear on the high spots that could have been damaged in the drum of a cloths dryer. It's not an error or variety coin.

It's just PSD and only worth 25¢. Sorry.

Very sharp edges copper is on the same plane as the nickel clad layers when observed under magnification if it took an acid bath and copper dissolved more rapidly the nickel clad layer would not line up with the copper.

I agree with the Dryer Coin hypothesis. If not specifically that, some other similar process created that damage.

The weight would go a long way to answering your question.

A nickel planchet would not create the full rims as seen on this one. Some parts of the raised rim would be missing and maybe even some of the devices.

Nickel planchets aren't clad. They are a 25% Nickel and 75% Copper alloy. You would not see any copper layer from the use of a nickel planchet.
