Hi all,

*** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

One more request for grading from you. What do you think of this 1941-S quarter?

There are a lot of "hairlines" from the plastic flip. I have tried to crop the photos so you can see that those start off the coin and go over, so you can discount them quickly.

I hate to say anything like this, lest I be wrong, but it is by far the best I have seen in person. It's on the way to NGC, so I can update you after you guess the grade. And, because of that, these are the only photos I can provide.

Thanks,
Grade-This-1941-S-Quarter.--Best-I've-Ever-Seen!

Honestly, everyone, I'm looking for 67+ or 68 with this one. I think this is the real deal. Hope so!

The first time I added way too many photos, something like 12. Sorry. It got cut down to only two, though. Here are just two more angles for the obverse. If I'm hoping for a 67+ or 68, I think I need to give some more evidence. Hopefully the 4 total photos aren't too many.

I'll go MS-66 + from these photos, only because I sent in two early '50's quarters that looked flawless like this and they came back as MS-64 for the '50 and MS-66 for the '51.
Although, I do hope it gets the MS-68 you want.I too was looking for 68's on my grades.
Can't wait to see what they give you.

I only buy Washington quarters graded by NGC specifically because they are serious tight wads on grades above 67.

It's really hard to tell a final numerical grade with the coin inside anything. Blast white, absolutely. At least 66 certainly. 67 probably. Higher is a gamble.

Hi again all,

Thanks for the opinions, and glad to continue the conversation, especially before we get the results. I have a feeling that anyone who says "this coin is an MS68" is probably wrong most of the time.

I guess where I'm coming from is that the intensity of the luster on this coin is different than other Washingtons I've seen personally. Again, I'm just trying to understand US coin grading at this point.

What I would say is that MS 65, 66, 67 quarters basically look the same but they have less marks, and, importantly, smaller marks as you go up, particularly on the bust itself. So, an MS65 is a basic MS67 coin with more marks. Or, an MS67 is a basic MS65 coin with less marks.

This coin, to me, is another world in terms of the luster intensity. Who knows? Maybe it was cleaned to get this way! Or, the luster does qualify for a higher grade and there are just too many marks. There are a lot of reasons it could not be a 68 or a 67+.

Again, anybody going out on a limb and saying an older coin is a 68 is usually wrong, I'm sure.

I'll find out soon and post the result, no matter how wrong I am!

Many toned coins can get high MS grades, most important is the amount of hits and marks IMO. Frosty mint fresh luster like this one can also be found on lower MS grade coins. It does have nice eye appeal.

I am wondering how the three small marks on the upper neck might affect the grade. Otherwise, it is a very clean coin with great mint luster.

I could see MS-66.
