Hi guys,

Im wondering if this melted effect seen in Jeffersons face on
obverse 1983 P nickel could be mint error or some
type of chemical damage? Its on his temple and around eye.

It could be a VERY, VERY, VERY Late Stage Die strike. All of the lettering is mushy and looks like it's moving towards the rim. The wavy lines in the fields would also be an indicator of a VLSD strike. Now the weird part. This is not considered to be an error. Many coins are struck with dies that are worn out. The resulting coins look mushy or blurry.

Lets see what the others think, but I think I'm right on this one.

Very Late Die State coin with heavy Die Deterioration. 1983 Nickels were notorious for this.

Oops. I had the right idea but I used the wrong terminology. VLDS or Very Late Die State. Thanks for the correction. I knew it didn't sound quite right, but it was late and I was sleepy.

Next time I'll do my research before I post, or I'll try to get to sleep earlier.

Also on the bridge of the nose, that is showing extreme die polishing on that area. But not a keeper unless you want one for educational purposes to show to new collectors.
