ccobb Valued Member United States 485 Posts	Posted 10/06/2019 1:05 pm Recently attended an estate sale that listed "coins" in the advertisement. There were thousands of coins in 2x2's. Hundreds of mint sets and proof sets that sold for crazy high prices (ie common mint sets worth about $3-7 sold for $30) needless to say I didn't get any of them. So Idk if everyone went broke or there just wasn't any interest in the cents but I got everything you see here plus more for less than $150! I was the only bidder on the Lincoln cents. 26 nearly complete books of LWC for $2.00 each. 15 nearly complete books of LMC for $2.00 each. Three coffee cans full of LWC for $5 each. 5 Cigar boxes full of uncirculated rolls, Indian heads, large cents and miscellaneous other stuff all in 2x2's for $5 each. Ive already sorted out hundreds of "S" MM LWC. Most of the LMC's are ruined because the books were not stored properly and the damp cardboard of the books damaged the edges of most zincolns. There are 15 1909 but only three have the VDB initials (two are very worn) and I posted below the only good one which appears to have a period only after the initial V. I've bought ten new LWC books to fill for this winter's project. Although I'm very pleased with this "score" I can't help but to feel a little sad that this person's collection sold for so little and wound up in the hands of a beginner. I'll try to do it justice! moxking Rest in Peace United States 17900 Posts	Posted 10/06/2019 1:18 pm Congratulations on some seriously nice scores. Estate auctions that include coins are prevalent everywhere I've ever been. Common coins do little, but anything even remotely cool such as Shield or V nickels and any Seated or Barber coinage sell for very good prices. Toss in a common date CC Morgan and watch the feathers fly. I'm convinced in my area of the world that the farmers just want to prove they have money to burn. I put 40-60 lots in every other weekend with my favorite Colonel with lower grade Type and use the profits (which are sometimes almost scary high) for nice MS type for my collection. But why would that area be polished? A clash of the head is a bit farther away than that? But a clash issue might require polishing of the reverse die: Report this Post to the Staff

I watched a 46-P WLH in AU go for $60 at the last auction I attended. The winner, who knew I was a dealer asked why I didn't bid on it. I told him that if he came down to the shop in the morning I would sell him as many AU (40s) Walkers for $15 each. Sure enough he walked in the next day and walked out with a dozen or so Walkers, as he was leaving, he turned and looked at me; saying "Now I know why you don't bid on anything. What in the world are people thinking?". I shrugged my shoulders and said ( as he was a good customer, that I had a good relation with ( he mostly bought cents. This was his first foray into halves), I asked "Well, ask yourself, why you spent so much money on that coin". You did well, and I agree that it is sad when people life long collections bring much less than they deserve. Report this Post to the Staff
