Is this an error. I thought that the shield was added in 1864?

I hope that it is an error or a variety.

Thanks.

First of all To CCF , on the top portion of the reverse of the coin is the shield . Not sure why you say there is no shield on this coin .

The only Indian Head with no shield was the 1859. They added the shield in 1860. Your coin is normal for the year.

Keep looking and post when you have questions!

I meant that there WAS a Reverse shield and there should be none; I was told by a reliable collector that the shield was added in 1864 but that was wrong.

Thanks for your reply.

The 1864 Indian Head cent was the year that the "L" was added to the ribbon on the obverse. That may be the coin the collector was thinking of. The L initial stands for Longacre, or James Barton Longacre to be precise, the coins designer. The 1864 coins with the L initial sell for much more than a 1864 without the L.

Edit: Spelling/Grammer.

Lacking a Red Book or other reliable source for the comparison of U.S. coins, one can simply google "1863 Indian cent" and look at the pics. By doing so, it becomes evident that the shield was present in 1863. ebay is another good resource for comparing coins, prices, grades, etc.
