I have this 1723 Wood's Hibernia halfpenny, and I am wondering if anyone knows the Martin number for it? I don't have access to the reference.

Beautiful coin.

I can't help with that reference, but I would mention that the oil on our fingers is very corrosive to coins. It would be better to always hold any coin by its edges only.

Your coin, your choice. But we should all strive to preserve the historical value of these items by insuring their grade and eye appeal are maintained.

Usually I handle coins by the edge, but I was unable to get a good photo of the coin when it was lying on my desk, or when holding it by the edge, so I did handle it. I probably would be a little more cautious about that if there wasn't damage on the reverse, although the coin still has nice details.

It can be quite a project to attribute these. If I can find some spare time I'll give it a shot, might not be before the weekend though.

OK, yours wasn't too bad to ID. It is a Martin 4.65-Gc.38 and it is a rare variety. Martin has it listed as an estimated R7.

Thank you very much! The fact it's a rare variety is a nice bonus.
