Hello, I am new to this coin forum and was wondering what the blurriness on these two nickels is caused by. I've seen less extreme versions of this on a few other nickels and didn't know if the coins became like this pre or post mint. Is it possible that these coins are just marked by very late stage die caps?

Some sort of environmental damage.

They both show heavy environmental damage. Since the composition is the same, I wouldn't expect either coin to react differently to the environmental factors.

Note the weakening of the rims. It was acid dipped for a time.
