2000-P Kennedy Half Dollar / KHD Major Portions Of Obverse Missing. Strikethrough Error?

Large portions of the devices on the obverse are missing, while others are very clear. Originally I thought this might be die derioriation, but that should be relatively equal around the entire periphery of the coin. However, "BERT" in LIBERTY is very clear. There is also a place on the reverse below the eagle's tail feathers where the stars are mostly missing and the word "HALF" is very weakly struck. Is this all part of a grease strikethrough error or something else? Report this Post to the Staff

I don't know if it has any numismatic value, but to me this is the most interesting find from my CRH yesterday. I like errors that can clearly be seen with the naked eye. nick10 Pillar of the Community United States 3207 Posts	Posted 10/13/2019 12:06 pm About 30 years ago I met someone who vehemently insisted errors would be a thing of the past because now (this is around 1990) the mint had computers that could check every detail of every coin right after it was struck, and toss out the bad coins. Here we are three decades later and struck through plus other errors continue. Report this Post to the Staff

At the end of the day, what is the cost to the mint of releasing a coin with an error? Coins are not like most products that won't work if they have an error. Most people will never notice the error, and the coin will still do its job. Why would the mint spend millions of dollars to buy and maintain a quality control system to scan and remove error coins? I agree with you 100%. The errors still exist and will continue. Report this Post to the Staff

This is a classic example of this. Note the date. Show, wide devices. Almost blocked out, but still there. Report this Post to the Staff
