finally came across 1998 Wide AM, so grateful to finally find one for the collection!    die crack  anyone know why the ear would be outlined?

Slight Machine Doubling. It is not a doubled die, as doubled dies leaving a raised area, not a flat area:  Enlarge this image and note all the doubled ears are raised, showing a spread on the ear areas inside or outside of the ears. Or the die was slightly polished on the edge of the taper of the ear. Anything removed off the die, will show as a raised area on the coins struck with that die. Often seen on edges of deeper devices. (Columns on the reverse of Memorials, and other larger devices)

I figured that was what was going on but thought maybe for deterioration, still Loving this Wide AM though, first one!

Thanks flag4! quick question do you guys pass your coins in acetone and distilled water before 2x2? or better to just stick it in a 2x2 the way you find it?

Congrats, that's a nice WAM! A quick 5 second dip in acetone is all that's needed before 2x2.

Thanks Tunnioc and Montcollector appreciate it, so @ Tunnioc 5 second acetone rinse but then rinse off right with distilled water right?
