Maybe a short time as a Dryer Coin? A few hundred (or thousand) bounces around the drum and it happened to fall out? It kinda looks like the start of a Dryer Coin.

Looks like it was left in soda for a time. Note the missing zinc on the rim on the top half of the obverse. The rims are not rolled over enough to be a dryer cent.
