This doesn't look like doubling I've seen before. Is it due to a weak die strike or is it just an odd case of Machine Doubling? Any insights would be appreciated.

There hasn't been a single DD for that date for 35 yrs. If they existed, I'd think it would be documented by now.

Yes, I agree that this looks like Die Deterioration Doubling--I believe that it tends to hit the outer parts of the letters (i.e. nearest to the rim) the most.

1985 would be die wear, not Die Deterioration. Also Machine Doubling.
