I found this neat looking 1968 the old fashioned way on the ground! I quickly noticed the Y in liberty is "wiped" off for a lack of the proper term. I looked closer when I got home and noticed the other "what happened's?" I labeled to make it easier

1. Clearly has a something odd with the ear area but I see a 5

2. It looks to be a D like the Mintmark for Denver

3. Looks as if the 8 was a B and wiped on the bottom part of the 8

4. The Y is completely wiped clean off

Can anyone explain how this could have happened? I see it's a coin that has been damaged by circulation but there's more to this story.

Thanks for your time and input

As a wrecked car may look interesting, but you realize that it didn't leave the factory looking like it does now. It was damaged. Just like your coin. An interesting thought is when you see incuse marks on a coin, you have to realize 99% of the time, that these are damage marks on the coin. Just 1% of the incuse marks on a coin will be an error. On coins as a collectable, just one of the marks on your coin would turn it into a cull coin. (undesirable) So know what a normal coin looks like and then you will know what damage is on a circulated coin. Even coins fresh out of the rolls can have damage on them just during the mint process. So learn what happened, then move on to the next coin.
