Not missing clad, just an environmentally damaged coin. You might want to do some research on the error coins you wish to collect, as many collectors mistakenly think that damaged coins are errors. Don't fall victim to non error coins on ebay and what not.

@slc, my thought is that you need an accurate weight for this quarter before you start planning your retirement. Most often these end up being the correct weight, but one or both sides has suffered chemical or environmental exposure. Let us know the weight and then we can start helping you figure out what you have.

The first photo did not show the color well. Does this make a difference? It is red in color. Weight 5.71

The weight is about right for a normal quarter. If the layer of copper/nickel clad was missing from the coin it would weigh about 4.67 grams.

Here's an older Washington quarter with the obverse clad layer missing before the strike. http://goccf.com/t/357961 You can see how the copper layer looks in the image from that topic. You can even see the mint luster on the copper surface, but it's uncirculated.
ANA ID: 3203813 - CONECA ID: N-5637 Clean a coin that may be worth collecting? Please DON'T! When in doubt, leave it dirty!!
