Looks like the coin was in a house fire. The bubbles were from extreme heat and the blacken areas also confirm this.

i think coop is right, it definitely looks like a fire damaged coin.

So the bubble on both sides of the coin is from fire damage. And the doubling and the extra letters are from the fire too?
