Hello all. I'm trying to get an idea of how to spot out shoddy Trade dollars. I have a question, is this real?

http://cgi.ebay.com/1878-S-TRADE-SI...RE_W0QQitemZ a href= https://www.coincommunity.com/go/link.asp?target=https://www.ebay.com/itm/-/230294472835 target= _blank rel= nofollow 230294472835 /a QQcmdZViewItemQQssPageNameZRSS:B:SRCH:US:101

If not, can someone put up a picture of a real one. I'm getting ready to go to a coin show here in a couple weeks and I want to know what to look for.

Hi Cabomhn,
This coin looks pretty good to me and it has excellent eye appeal for a Trade dollar that has been cleaned. The effect of the cleaning is pretty subtle. I think their grade of AU-50 is conservative. It sounds like this dealer has a good return policy, as well. If you were interested you might ask if they would refund your money if it turned out to be a fake. You could submit it to ANACS at your expense and agree to keep it as long as it was slabbed as authentic.

Here are photos of a real 1878-S from a Heritage auction, graded AU-58 by ANACS.

Maybe I am just paranoid but I don't like the look of this Trade dollar, can't put my finger on it exactly (font of the "420" on the reverse, look of the ribbon. I don't know.) I do know I would not buy a Trade dollar from anyone I didn't trust 100% with a lifetime "genuine coin or return it" policy unless it was in a PCGS, ANACS or NGC/NCS holder. Too many excellent fakes that can fool the best dealers. See article from Coin World http://www.coinworld.com/news/102102/news-3.asp
The article also gives some diagnostics to look for that you can put into practice at coin shows. Beware, these are also known to occasionally show up in fake PCGS holders.

It's hard to compare it to the ANACS coin because of the effects of the cleaning... the ebay coin has the appearance of having a very uniform relief height, particularly in looking at the right talon in relation to the arrows. But look at the detail in the cotton bale on the obverse of the ebay coin... that is SHARP.

The tone of the ebay coin does sound like what they're describing in the CoinWorld article...

If I could, I'd want to see the "In God We Trust" legend under magnification... that inset writing is tricky to do, and is a "tell" for a number of counterfeits. You can see on the ANACS coin it looks dead-even, with very square-looking edges to the engraving, where to me the lettering on the ebay coin looks to have slightly chamfered edges.

The description says "very few marks but has been cleaned. This is a beautiful coin with original white luster!" isn't this contradictory? Then it says "This coin is extremely rare and hard to find in this condition." Yet, the 78-S has the 4th highest mintage of 17 regular issue mintages.

One general rule:

ebay Trade $=fake.

unless it is slabbed.

I know that this isn't fair to the honest sellers, but....
That is ebay's fault.
