This one is a head scratcher. The elements are raised (indicated by white arrow), but do not resemble anything on the opposite obverse side. The only thing that looks remotely close, are the obverse denticles, but then the question remains, how did those end up in the middle of the reverse fields? Just thinking out loud here but is it possible something foreign got dropped on the die and some were minted before it was discovered and polished out? When you reduce that photo to SA, it is so miniscule that it would be hard to see at first.

Exactly my thought JimmyD. Looks like die damage from handling.

you know I was thinking it was caused by a single foreign object that had made it through the die four times and with each hit it disenagrated until nearly most of it was gone by the fouth hit (bottom of cash marks) so maybe there are some coins out there with 1 or 2 or 3 of those square clash marks, this is just a guess as I cant think of anything else

Looks like the denticle marks made on a coin, from a larger denomination. Could they somehow have made their way on to the die of a cent?

Dis you get a conclusion about that coin? I am asking that question because someone found a similar coin on numicanada.
Thanks for the update!

Hello all, it's been a while since I've posted, life kinda got in the way. I have found several of these 1959 cents all with the same square raised marks, I think that during handling something damaged the die surface.
