I am looking to purchase this coin. I have always loved the flowing hair dollars. Of course I do not have an AU/MS budget, looking for entry level specimen like this. I know there is a 1795 plugged though this is a 1795 three leaf that has been plugged. I have some questions. Why was it plugged, due to old necklace hole? Was it plugged more modern or was this done hundreds of years ago? With it being plugged what do you value you the coin? Does it totally kill eye appeal in your opinion? Appreciate any input. I would pass personally, look for a slightly lower grade problem free example

If I had any interest in acquiring a coin like this, I may? have some interest in buying this particular example, but it would have to be offered at somewhere around 25% of the VG10 price.

Quote: Why was it plugged, due to old necklace hole? Was it plugged more modern or was this done hundreds of years ago? Yes pretty sure and unknowable. I will say that the plugging is not particularly good-looking and also detracts from the eye appeal. In the early days of my collecting, I would have jumped on this piece, but now I am more in the "pass" camp with @sel and the frog.

Save a few more bucks. No offense to you but the only ones who might be interested in this coin have recently arrived in the coin collecting field.

If it's cheap enough, buy the coin and have it expertly repaired. It'll still Details grade but will look a heck of a lot better.

I haven't been collecting very long compared to most on here, but I would probably keep saving for a better opportunity.

Avoid. Buyer's remorse will almost certainly creep in at some point after buying.

I agree with sel_69l: ....I may have some interest in buying this particular example, but it would have to be offered at somewhere around 25% of the VG10 price.
And that price is well under $1,000 USD.

I don't think buyers' remorse will come into play in this case, because there is no other way of getting a Flowing Hair Dollar on a restricted budget.

In fact, the opposite may be the case. I bought a damaged Roman gold aureus from London, for about £175, way back in 1974. It had a banker's test cut across the head effigy of Claudius, the Roman Emperor, (AD 41-54).
I sold it 10 years later, with a little bit of buyer's remorse. Now, I really wish I hadn't sold it. Why? There is an undamaged example of an IMPER RECEPT Aureus on Vcoins for $100,000 !

While there are certainly examples of this coin with greater eye appeal, the history behind this coin makes it a fine addition to a collection of someone who has a limited budget. I agree with paying around 25% of VG price. If you can get this coin for around that price, I think it could be a good buy that you could really enjoy.
A lot of the charm of numismatcs, for me at least, is the history involved. This coin certainly has tons of that.

Thank you all for your replies. I love the history of the coins the most. The story they tell. Like who's neck was this coin around? And more importantly who did the hack plug job on it haha. The asking price was $1800 and got him down to $1000. Though may just pass in hopes of something a little more pleasing to the eye to show up for sale. My budget is around $1500 for this coin. I fell in love with the flowing hair coins, and have always wanted one.
