I came across a 1992 silver eagle in a local pawn shop recently that has a feature with which I am not familiar. I hope someone can tell me about this bullion coin. The coin has a frosted or matte finish and on the reverse surrounding the eagle and stars has a ring that appears to have been part of the original strike. The ring is perfectly circular and leaves the words "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA 1 OZ. FINE SILVER - ONE DOLLAR" on a very slightly raised band around the outer edge of the coin and surrounding the eagle and stars. Rverything else is typical or nominal with the coin. What do I have here? I can't find reference to such as coin in my limited reference books and would very much appreciate any information. Thanks in advance. I would like to upload the images I have made of the coin, but am not smart enought to handle that task. If it would help identify the coin I would be glad to email with images attached (I have figured out how to do that, at least). Thanks again, and sorry I can't get the images uploaded.

peapo, Quick question ... what are the size of the pics, i.e., 110kb? I'll guide you through the pic posting tutorial. It isn't that hard and real easy after a couple of tries.

From the description it sounds like something caused from elevated die pressure . I see this effect often on other coins and it would be no real surprise for some of the ASE to have been affected the same way from the same cause .

Regarding the ring - it is a clear, sharp, incised circle, with no sign of flowing metal you sometime see on a Kennedy half said to be the result of elevated die pressure. This appears to be part of the die pattern as opposed to an error - but I must say I am certainly not sure of that at all. Still working on the upload of images. Thanks for your reply and interest, Metalman.

Thanks, SeatedNut - I would be grateful for advice on the uploading of images to the Forum. I would email you but I don't have enough posts to email another member. Thanks again. I appreciate any help.

peapo,
1. Make sure the picture size is under 100kb. If you don't know how to resize the photo, let me know. 2. Click on the "green camera icon" below the post box, then "browse" from the pop-up window. Find the picture in your files on the drop-down list and click on it. Then click "upload picture". The program will tell you if it was successful, if not correct the file (improper characters in file name, too large, etc.), then close the window. 3. You'll see a string of text in the post box. Highlight and delete everything before "http:\\" and everything after ".jpg" 4. Highlight what is left and from the top group of icons (grey ones) click on the fourth one from the right (insert image). You will end up with something like this [img]http:\\my_picture.jpg[img] 5. Hit the preview button to see if all worked as planned.

SeatedNut - I can't even resize to under 100kb. I tried Microsoft Photo Editor, Quicktime Picture Viewer, Paint, Irfanview, and Microsoft Office Picture Manager. I got the images to 480 pixels and smaller, but image size still shows 161 kb. Thanks for your assistance and sorry for the trouble.

peapo, Don't give up ... here's how you do it. Open the pic file with "Paint". From the top bar, click on "image" and select "stretch/skew". You should see two boxes in the "stretch" option, both showing 100%. Change each box to the same reduced number. If your file sizes are 161kb, try 65% in each box. Remember to save the file with a different name than the original. I just add an X to the end of the file name. Open this new file and check the size. I think you'll find it's under 100kb. Can't wait to see the pics.

Or, in Irfan view.. after resizing.. File -> Save as -> Save quality (should appear in a separate box) - lower this to 75% -> Save Not really a big difference in the image but significantly lowers the size of the picture.
