Here's a recent token pickup of mine and I was hoping to get an opinion on the grade. I have my fingers crossed for something around an AU, but I am nowhere near an expert on this series. Probably one of my favourite coin designs of all time though. Cheers

AU-58. Eye Appeal 6/10. Generally dark coins are avoided by many, but this one still retains significant luster in the hidden spots of the design elements.
The only possible concern is if this was stripped down with a cleaner and retoned with gun blueing. The different toning color in the open field areas might need a professional opinion.

AU by US standards. But maybe only XF by Canadian standards.

Thank you all for the responses!
@moxking I had similar concerns with the toning. Although initially attractive to me, I'm aware that in certain cases it can be a result of cleaning. The colours are pretty subtle, however

Grade: Between EF-45 and AU-50 (Possibly with an old cleaning and retoning) Variety: Courteau #290 (The most commun pair of dies for the 1 Penny 1857) From my book: ------------- This token from my archives:

Thank you very much for the information! Super helpful. I'll have to give your book a look at some point.

AU-50 and I think it would straight grade, not sure it has been cleaned.

I agree with Ains "Grade: Between EF-45 and AU-50". with a strong lean towards 50
Not too concerned about the color/toning, it's difficult to capture copper accurately in a photo.
As far as grade/value, 1857 is by far the easiest/most affordable to find in Mint State. When it comes to 1857 don't settle for anything else but MS60+

Not too concerned about the color/toning, it's difficult to capture copper accurately in a photo. Indeed, this token is much closer to «AU-50». Otherwise, it's not just the color of the token that led me to believe that this coin had been cleaned and retoned a +/- long time ago, but also the discoloration spots and the typical shade variations. For example: But hey, it's not an exact science, let alone through photos. Moreover, this token is still relatively pleasant to the eye. Note: Sorry if my comment is not very clear, I have difficulty in this case translating my thoughts into written English.
