I won a group of nine unattributed Romans on ebay. When they came I was stunned by an absolutely stunning Constantine I SARMATIA DEVICTA AE-3 from Arles in the lot.

Rarely have I seen an ancient bronze this attractive. It has almost proof-like surfaces that shimmer in the light. It has a black patina over partially silvered surfaces that makes the silvering look gold.

On top of it all, it is a very rare type with a cuirassed bust. There are currently 72 SARMATIA DEVITAs on VCoins.com and over 30 on ebay and not one of them has a cuirassed bust.

It's attributed as RIC, Vol. VII, #258. It is listed as "Rarity 4".

I just thought I'd share this lovely with everyone.

Really nice remaining detail on this one. Well done!

It has a sheen as if it has been sprayed with clear acrylic lacquer. (quite safe)
That's OK. Leave it there.
Easily removed with an acetone soak, but I wouldn't do that.

Love those unexpected finds! Makes collecting that much more exciting. Yes a beautiful example and may I add a quite expensive (for me anyway) addition to your collection. The details are exquisite, you can actually still see the wavy hair a beady little eyes of the captive - that is great.

I have a few with lacquer, I personally don't like it, but I've never removed it.
