Several issues with Standing Liberty quarters including a lot of wear in the date, cost and less available in higher grades as many are heavily circulated.

Walkers have a much better design to my way of thinking, but If you are going to build a set of these, they really need to be in MS-60 or better, preferably with obvious luster.
Both designs have major problems if they have lots of wear. Buffs: with lots of wear, the date can become illegible. Walkers: a strong diameter wear line develops on both sides.
I agree with the idea of SLQ's, if you decide to build a set at a lower grade level.

Quote:Calling it a Buffalo nickel when the animal is not a buffalo is wrong, I'm calling it what the animal actually is. It's a bison, hence I'll call it a bison nickel :) We in Fort Fun know that a bison's just a craft beer drinking humpbacked hipster buffalo.

both are great series but the Walking Liberty halves are my preference, larger (for older eyes to see), Silver just because I like silver verses nickle, and they tone well.

Congradulations on saying Bison, not Buffalo. So many people just can't get it that they are not the same animal. I guess it is sort of like our Penny being called Penny, not Cent. Once started, just goes on and on and on. As to which one to collect, I'd say both. As you find one or the other that you can afford, get that one and move on.

I think I opened up a can of worms . Lets put it this way ; I've been collecting coins now for some 56 years and I have never heard anyone call it a Bison Nickel ,except fhjacinto . Yes I know the animal on the reverse of that 5 cent piece is a Bison but the coin hobby in general calls it a Buffalo nickle or like I said before : an Indian Head Nickel . Fhjacinto , you have to understand I am from the old school like many other members here on CCF .We call it what we were taught when we were a newbie .

Its funny, but today I went to look through my coins in whitman boxes and not albums and I have 5 Bison Nickels and 5 Walking Liberty, so I guess I'm still not leaning either way :)

@Captain Jack Quote: Buffalo nickels are highly circulated too... lots of missing dates. This is one reason, I was a little more leaning toward the Walking Liberty. Like Frog said above the Bison Nickels are one of the few coins that have excellent Obverse and Reverse, but wear is an issue, I was going to try to keep the set to XF+ but that becomes really costly in Bison Nickels and VG-F in the early series the dates are almost non existent. And walking liberty is silver, and silver still has a little value.
