At least the seller is pretty upfront about what he's selling. Although selling altered coins isn't allowed on ebay. Not sure why the interest.

Fun post. Why do you assume only those in their right minds participate on ebay?

Among other things, I've long collected counterfeits and altered dates, using them to inform and educate fellow collectors. I'd not have paid more than $3 for this crudely executed specimen. That said, I've known a few copper nuts who relish oddball pieces like this. I once saw a well done "1815" Turban Head cent trade for $100 or so. It was likely an altered 1813. I've seen altered date 1804 and 1799 cents sell for $200-$300 .... likely, as hole-fillers. For the obsessive-compulsive collector, the "1815" completes the date run by adding that one, missing year! Getting back to the subject coin, might this 1845 cent, turned 1815, be an otherwise rare variety? Just a thought?

ebay unfortunately has some negative connotation, so I can see where the op is coming from, but many great coins have bought bought and sold from them as well, so that should be considered too. regards

I buy a lot of large cents from ebay and my comment was not about ebay not having occasional rare coins or bargains. It was directed at this particular coin and the price it sold for.

I think it sold for that much as a curiosity. It's not worth much normally but I'd pay a small premium just because it's kinda cool. $70? Maybe not for me, but I'm not much of an EAC guy myself, so I can see the EAC guys bidding like that and not be suprised.

Yes EACer can be a bit weird over these altered pieces. There were three examples of 1845's being altered to 1815 in the Dan Holmes sale (Dan Holmes III) Two went for $98 each and one for $230. The $230 one makes no sense to me at all. Here it is.

That is an incomprehensible price for sure. Makes the OP's coin look reasonable. Which I actually think it is.
