Can someone help me determine if this is damage? I know it wasn't made on a penny planchet because it would not fit the full image of a Nickel. But it's the same thickness with much of the same detail or a regular 1984 D. So what could have caused this?

The coin does look too big to be a copper planchet. Do you know the weight?

Carry it with your change for a time and what the higher areas start to turn back to their normal color and the red turn to black in color on the lower field areas. Take images every three days and post your results here. So I can document the progress for my educational files. You will receive credit for the images you take.
