I have what sure seems to be a 1916 SLQ. I checked about 6-7 different diagnostics, and it looks like it checks out. Even the date appears to show a 6 on the end. To me it's either a real 16 or a carefully doctored 17, but I guess I won't really be certain until I have it graded, which I plan on doing at a show next weekend. What do you guys think? I don't have a camera with a macro lens, although my brother has an iphone which should be able to take better photos if needed. If it is indeed real, would this grade closer to VG or F details? It seems like the type 1 had weaker strikes, perhaps in the 16s in particular, so I don't know if the same grading criteria for the 17 T1 and the rest of the SLQ series are the same as for 1916.

I'm not sure how to quote, so this is in response to the previous reply. I saw that thread as well as few others, and those discussions are what really led me to believe that it was in fact a 1916 when I was going after it. I think it is, I'm just curious what the consensus here seems to be. I used a lot of the same identifying characteristics to come to my own conclusion, but it's always nice to have a second opinion!

Pretty sure it's a forgery. The rims are too wide, Liberty's head is funky and the date is obviously altered. Looks like a bad cast counterfeit.

What makes it seem like a cast counterfeit? It was being sold as a 1917, so unless someone was just hoping that buyers would suspect it as a 16, it certainly wasn't being advertised as such.
Rest in Peace

The whole coin seems odd . How can all those denticles on obverse be that clear with all that wear ? And look at that reverse , clear as a bell . If it's legit I don't think it would be a 1917 ,but a crazy worn 1916 .

The wear pattern is completely unnatural. It's wrong.

It has a recessed date, everything before 1925 was raised. I vote fake.

UPDATE: I sent this and about a dozen other coins off to get graded. Just got the notification that the grading is finished and it is currently in shipping. This coin came back as a 1916 with a G4 grade. It wasn't designated as "details" or "cleaned", "altered", "tooled", or anything else. I'm pretty happy as I went on a mission specifically to cherry pick this coin, and found one relatively quick. I may never find another, but even in low grade, I'm thrilled with the outcome!
Rest in Peace

G-04 ? Are you kidding ? I'm sure the only reason they gave it a G-04 is because of the full edges and rims of this coin . IMHO .
Congrats on your cherry pick .

I must admit I don't know the nuances of the differences in grading criteria between type 1, 2, and 3 SLQs. I would imagine that a 1929 with this wear might not get a G4?

I am staggered by this grade. It doesn't even look like a "6". Good for you, but not something that would interest me.

This coin was graded by ANACS. Still don't know how to quote in a reply! Is there a button to click on the appropriate post or do I have to use forum code?
