I was relooking through my wheat cents for varieties and this 1956 cent stood out. This coin looks very similar to the D/D/S OMM because of the extra metal on the right side of the mint mark. That metal clearly doesn't belong, but I don't know why or how it got there. Could anyone tell me more about this coin? Thank you.

Looks like varietyvista recently pulled its '56 OMMs:

Not definitive, but something to consider.

It's listed in the Wexler book as 1956 D WOMM-001. What do you think?

This coin doesn't appear to have the die scratches

I don't see it as an OMM or a RPM, and since you can not match die markers either it must me normal.

These are referred to as die dots. The die developed post holes on it. The void leaves a raised area on the coins fields.

Here is what the 1956D-1OM-002 looks like.

CONECA never listed this as an overdate. They always considered it a RPM.
