It looks like a Magician's coin. It may be two nickels that have been machined to fit together. They may open at the seam on the edge. Do you know the weight?

The weight is correct for a normal nickel. That doesn't mean that it's not a Magician's coin, it was just the first thing to check. I cant tell from the photos, does it look like a deeper cut in the center of the edge or is it just 2 levels? Does the coin look as if you could "open" it?

Do you have a caliper to measure the diameter of the coin? It could be a Partial Collar strike error.

It's just 2 levels and I'll check to see if I have a caliper

Railroad rim = partial collar strike, I'm guessing.

Coinfrog nailed it.
"Is it worth keeping" well it would only cost you 5 cents and the cost of a 2x2 to have it in your collection...however I don't think there is a large premium on it, maybe a buck or two...others?

it seems to be a true error coin and worth keeping. They sell for $4 to $8 in most coin shops. A partial collar error occurs when the planchet doesn't drop all of the way into the retaining collar. The reverse on this coin should be the correct 21.21 mm, with the obverse being slightly larger. That's also the cause of the slightly off-center look of the coin.

Playing devil's advocate here...
It doesn't look like a partial collar error to me, as the OPs coin doesn't look like Coop's examples, nor any of mine.
Looks like the OP's coin has been scored right in the center of the edge

Once the Jerrold said it was only 2 steps and not lower in the center on the edge, I could see it in the pictures. It's a very well centered partial collar!
