I don't even know where to start here. #128556; My father (who was a collector of everything coins being one of the many) passed away in 1993. I was just recently given access to his collection and I've been overwhelmed trying to figure out what is what. I don't know where to post this question, so I'm going to post it here. Please don't be angry, if there's a better place, I would welcome the direction. I have several sets of 1975 US Mint UNC 12 piece Coin Sets. Every set looks like this or a little better/worse. I've looked at 1960 - 1992 Proof Uncirculated Special sets and have seen coins that are foggy tarnish spotted etc. but this one year is weird, and I can't find a reason why, or anything similar for 1975. I have seen other 1975 US Mint UNC 12 piece Coin Sets that are perfect, so it's not like this was just a bad year or whatever. The Philadelphia Mint set looks okay. The Denver Mint set Penny looks like it sweated color that somehow seeped throughout the set. Does anybody know what would cause this, and if these are ruined or worth millions? Please help. I'm afraid this is typical for mint sets. 1969, '68, and '75 are the worst. This can happen even to coins under the best storage conditions sometimes because mint packaging is unstable. It contains a thin inner layer that contains PVC right up against the coins. Curiously one side is usually affected more than the other.
There's nothing you can do about it but many coins can be saved by a long soak in pure acetone and/ or 91% isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol. Most people just spend most of these but some coins are worth trying to save. Gems, varieties, and better dates like the '75 Philly Ike are worth the effort.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.

To start with look into buying a copy of what is called the Red Book by Whitman Publishing. It is a book full of info on coins and, although not accurate, prices. In it you can find info on most of your coins. |

Thanks everybody. Good thing I didn't quit my day job. The coins were stored with 60's - 90's sets. So far, this is the worst I've seen, and since other people seem to have nice 1975 sets, I thought maybe this would make them unique. I guess they're just ugly. #128556;

Questions are always welcome. My advice is to remove them from those dreaded mint plastic bags as they will only worsen. Follow the advice above with acetone, available at any big box home improvement center. A soak, no rubbing, then air dry followed by good two-by-two flips for storage. That should solve the problems in no time.

These should be worth some effort. They may have a bit of chemistry / moisture issues but they should still be otherwise unscratched and decent shape. High value, no. But quality strikes without damage and the unique designs have a bit of popularity to them.
These old sets are all over the place. Some look like they came in the mail yesterday, some look far worse than yours.
