Beautiful coin! The 1879-S is frequently seen in higher grades. PCGS has certified over 108,000 slabbed, with over 5,000 PLs and just under 1,000 DMPLs. NGC's numbers are similar, over 105,000 slabbed, with almost 5,000 PLs and just under 700 DMPLs. IIRC, those are the highest PL and DMPL figures for the Morgan series. It's hard to tell from photos whether a coin can make PL or DMPL. NGC's PL/DMPL definitions are based on 2"-4" of reflectivity for PL and 4+" of reflectivity for DMPL. Your coin definitely has frosted devices, and would appear at least to be SPL. That's as far as I can take it with the photos. it might help if you removed the coin from the 2x2 and photographed it in daylight, without a flash. Some people also hold the coin vertically and see how far it reflects readable newspaper print. Those may give a better idea of reflectivity. Again, it's a beautiful coin.

Definitely not a DMPL based on the reverse pic you show.

I too would say no to DMPL on this coin, based on the reverse alone as well, it might even be a tough PL though it looks like it could make it, it is very hard to graded PL and DMPL from static photos and even in hand very few people will agree the same on a borderline coin.

Yup, I'm not good on PL DMPL Morgs. SsuperDdave was the real expert :) Nice coin though.

Go to Google Images with two searches: PL Morgan and DMPL Morgan.
Compare what you see there with your own coin.
Would love to know what your better informed opinion happens to be.

MS63 looks PL but reverse photo is lacking some depth

As @fortcollins posted above better photos of both sides out of the 2x2 and showing the reflectivity of print would help determine the possibility of PL and DMPL designations. Very nice MS63/64 example regardless...

I agree with Dave, remove the coin from the 2x2 and shoot some new photos.

in order to determine depth you need to place the coin on end on newsprint. depth is determined by reading the last visible line that can be seen clearly. it looks like it has some depth but you really cant tell unless its against newsprint. a newspaper or magazine will work
