I recently found this nicely toned 82 small date copper. I am still looking for the elusive 82-D small date copper. Plenty of 82-P and D small date zinc, but no 82-D small date copper. The hunt continues.

Not for sure the population but the chances of finding one are almost impossible. You would probably find 5 1909 S VDB cents rather than a 1982 - D Small Date Copper Cent. https://www.numismaticnews.net/arti...copper-foundApparently it took 34 years for one of these to finally surface. Good Luck! EDIT: I think there have been 2 confirmed in existence so far, but I'm sure there are more out there. The second one found in existence sold for $18,800.

Finding one of these in the wild has about the same odds as the Canadian 1936 Dot cent ,as John1 says you have a better chance of finding a chicken with teeth

@John1, mainly based off of current certified pop numbers. Then look at the raw ones for sale around the internet and based on those numbers make a rough guess of how many still exist in the wild.

It's difficult to estimate how many exist of these definitely elusive cent. It's only list of coins I'd like to find for sure. As far as transitional planchet errors go 82 d small date, don't forget 83d and amazingly 1989d copper cents. Given those facts I am lead to believe there are 5 years in between the 83 and 89 copper cents that are yet to have discovery cents. If pre 82 copper planchets made it into the mix in 89 could there not be more and other years yet discovered amongst the trillions of cents in bank bags bank vaults and penny jars. I have came to believe that with the US mint anything is possible with the amount of currency they produce. quote unquote Thirty dollar bills for example.

Convinced myself I have a better chance at a transitional planchet error than I do at a 1969s DDO Lincoln Cent atleast. Thought I had found the small date copper once...and then I woke up

OK, my bad. I knew they are rare, but I thought the 82-D small date had a larger population than just a few. Well, I can still dream about finding one. The search continues!
